From December 2023 to January 2024, the Digital Supply Chain Institute (DSCI) and APQC jointly conducted a survey to gather insights from supply chain leaders on the role of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors in managing their supply chains and relationships with suppliers.
The purpose of this research is to understand the current state of ESG in supply chain management (SCM) and identify the emerging trends that will shape the future of the industry.
Spotlight on Key Insights:
- Wide Recognition of ESG Importance: ESG factors are widely acknowledged as critical pillars in supply chain management.
- Integration Challenges: Despite recognition, there’s a significant gap between acknowledging ESG’s value and its integration into core strategies and operations.
- Prioritization and Focus: Companies need to refine their focus on the ESG agenda by clearly defining priorities among environmental, social, and governance factors.
- Driving Forces: Regulatory compliance and customer expectations are primary drivers shaping the current ESG landscape.
- Challenges and Opportunities: Integration hurdles include costs, data reliability issues, and lack of employee knowledge and skills. However, enhanced brand reputation, competitive advantage, and regulatory compliance are among the benefits derived from improved ESG practices.
